From the de facto uniform of angsty teenagers to cool skater chicks, hoodies have grown so much since its humble beginnings. Nowadays, people from all walks of life embrace hoodies- celebrities, tech geeks, normal people like us. After all, who doesn’t want to be comfortable and stylish at the same time?

The Wu-Tang Clan’s ‘Enter The Wu-Tang (36 Chambers)’ album cover reflects this in a particularly grimy and gangsta way. Hoodies became a symbol of rebellion and anti-establishment, but not always in the right way. Since the hood allows people to conceal their faces, this piece of garment attracted a more unsavory crowd of people. It became the uniform of drug dealers and stick-up kids, skulking around with their faces half-covered while biding their time or working their corner. Because of this, hoodies became associated with crime and hoodlums.

Although this went on for quite some time, hoodies underwent a complete fashion overhaul. Designers like Vivienne Westwood, Raf Simons, and Nasir Mazhar took inspiration and brought the street to the runway. Hoodies became the new face of urban culture and became a quintessential piece and every person’s wardrobe. Nowadays, everyone from fast fashion brands like Zara to luxury heavy hitters like Balenciaga sells a huge range of hoodies in their collection, giving hoodies the redemption arc they deserve.

Hoodies For Women

With athleisure and loungewear trending in 2020, you can officially break out your hoodies for date night without worrying about looking sloppy. Thanks to how popular hoodies are, hoodies have evolved from the more oversized style to a more form-fitting look, hugging all your curves and accentuating your figure. Even the oversized hoodies are catered to a woman’s size and stature for a better fit.

Many women still don’t know how to style a hoodie beyond the jeans and hoodie combo. You’ll have to go a bit further if you want to bring this classic clothing piece from drab to fab.

How To Wear Hoodies?

Mix It Up With High Contrast Colors

Hooded sweatshirts with a pair of blue jeans don't quite cut it anymore. If you’re bored of it, try shaking up your outfit with a pop of color or bold patterns.

For example, a neon hoody with bike shorts and sneakers works perfectly for a chic athleisure look. You can also experiment by wearing a pastel ruffled skirt and a plain cropped hoodie for a more interesting silhouette. If you want to keep it safe, you can simply throw on some pinstriped or leather pants to complete your look. When in doubt, just wear a bright hoodie on top of a monochromatic outfit.

Add A Feminine Twist

Hoodies have always been a male-dominated world, but not anymore. You can wear hoodies as a girly-girl or as an adult woman with no problems. Not only are hoodies more flattering for women nowadays, but you can also give it a splash of your personality by adding your own feminine twist to it.

Pairing our signature hoodies with something a little more dressy can be a great way to fem up your outfit (using different shades of the same color can give you a great monochromatic look).  For a casual night out, throw on a cropped hoodie or tuck your hoodie into your skirt. A tapered skirt with a toned-down hoodie can refine your look enough for a comfortable but professional workday. You can also wear a mini skirt and some thigh-high boots for a more edgy look.

Classic Athleisure

There’s no harm in sticking to the classics every once in a while. After all, who doesn’t want to be comfortable and stylish at the same time?

Softer and heavier hoodies are great for the classic athleisure look. Zip-up hoodies, in particular, are great for autumn since you can take it off and reveal a form-fitting crew neck t-shirt below. To take it a step further, wear your hoodie with a pair of yoga pants or joggers and an oversized jacket. Better yet, go all out and wear your hoodie with matching track pants!

To avoid looking too baggy and frumpy, make sure you’re wearing form-fitting pants or something that hugs your body. Shoes can make or break your outfit, so wear the nicest pair of sneakers you have to channel your inner Kim Kardashian.

Layer It Up

A hoodie can send all sorts of messages - rebel, robber, or rockstar. Layering can go a long way in toning down your outfit and sending the type of message you want. Start with a white or black crew neck t-shirt, a soft zip-up hoodie, and finish the look with a large oversized coat. Bomber or leather jackets work beautifully for this outfit as well.

You can also customize your outfit to make them season-appropriate. Boots and a knit cap work wonders for your winter look while ankle boots work best for a spring or autumn look. You can also wear a pair of sunglasses and hold a tall cup of Starbucks in your hand for maximum effect. Unlike other styles, sneakers are a no-no for this look since it tends to make your outfit look sloppy.

Blazers And Hoodies

Despite being on the opposite side of the fashion spectrum, jackets and blazers pair surprisingly well with hoodies for a great casual-meets-business look (mixing fancy and casual is one of my favorite fashion statements).

You can also tone it down a notch by wearing a pantsuit over your hoodie for a professional yet subtle look. Don’t forget an eye-catching pump or boots to complete your look!

Experiment With Tailoring

Wearing your hoodie with tailored pants and blazer sharpens up your look and makes you more work-ready. Tailored blazers or coats give your body the structured and professional silhouette that you need to impress your clients.

You don’t have to tone down your style too much to make this work for the office. The only thing you have to take note of is the silhouette of your outfit. Make sure that nothing is too baggy or loose. For this to work, you need your outfit to have the right amount of flow and structure. When in doubt, throw on a pair of ankle boots and a flowy A-line skirt.

Different Jackets

Like blazers, different jackets give off a different vibe when paired with your hoodie. A leather jacket and a hoodie pairing is the kind of low-octane, evergreen outfit that works season after season.

A long trench coat with a cropped hoodie can also balance out your shorts or mini skirt. Finishing that outfit off with thigh-high boots can elevate your look to a whole new level of sleek and chic. Besides that, you can also shake up your look with a full pantsuit and a thin, cropped hooded sweatshirt for a more professional look.

How To Wear Hoodies For Summer Without Overheating

Although you typically wear hoodies in other seasons, you don’t have to ditch your hoodie in the summer. To avoid overheating, try some of these styling tips for hoodies in the summer.

Choose The Right Materials

The problem of overheating is easily fixable if you choose the right fabric for your hoodies. Sheer and mesh hoodies are perfect for the summer since they offer great ventilation and give an edge to your outfits. You can just wear it on top of your tank top for maximum breeziness and style.

If you want a little more coverage, you can also go for cotton, rayon, and linen hoodies. It doesn’t matter if you’re wearing a pullover hoodie or a zip-up one. Hoodies made of these materials will keep you cool in the heat.

Save It For Crazy Summer Weather

We get it. You worked hard for your summer bod, and this is the time to show it off. So, save your hoodie for the rainy days.

Hoodies are great to bring around since they keep you warm and fashionable at the same time. Skater dresses, maxi-length dresses, and midi dresses work well with both pullover and zip-up hoodies, so don’t be afraid to jazz up your outfit with some designer hoodies. If you’re feeling warm, you can tie the hoodie around your waist, which will give off a casual but stylish vibe.

General Hoodie Tips

  • Don’t dig out your university hoodies. You’re not a booze-infused college kid anymore, so keep them for Netflix and popcorn.
  • Pullover hoodies generally look more polished than their zip-up counterparts.
  • Hoodies are timeless pieces, so go for versatile styles instead of hoodies emblazoned with designer logos. You should impress with your style, not with the brands in your wardrobe.
  • The boyfriend trend isn’t going away, but that doesn’t mean you can’t grow up. No matter what type of vibe you’re going for, fitted hoodies generally look sharper than oversized hoodies.
  • Custom comedic hoodies are cute on a 20-year old, but they definitely don’t scream ‘fashion.’ Unless you’re going to a college frat party or hanging out with your friends in a low-effort setting, they should be kept for lazy nights.
  • Pure cotton hoodies generally last longer.
  • Over the age of 40? Ditch the ratty hoodies and opt for something made of luxe fabric. They look amazing with tailor blazers and pants.
